The Supreme Court of Nigeria has removed Julius Abure from his position as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP). In a unanimous decision delivered on Friday, a five-member panel overturned the earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had recognized Abure as the party’s leader.

The apex court determined that the Court of Appeal lacked jurisdiction in this matter, emphasizing that issues pertaining to party leadership are internal affairs and thus beyond the purview of judicial intervention.

Additionally, the Supreme Court noted that Abure’s tenure as chairman had expired. The court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and another party member, declaring it meritorious. Conversely, the cross-appeal submitted by Abure’s faction was dismissed for lacking merit.

This ruling introduces uncertainty regarding the Labour Party’s leadership, especially considering Abure’s prominent role in supporting the party’s recent presidential candidate, Peter Obi. The party has yet to release an official statement addressing the implications of this judgment.
