The CDC has reported 216 pediatric flu deaths so far this season, the most since the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. “This number that we have now is almost certainly an undercount,” said Dr. Sean O’Leary of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He added that the final number is expected to rise once all the data is compiled.

Lower flu vaccination rates among children may be contributing to the increase. As of April, 49% of children had received the flu shot, down from 53% at the same time last season and from 64% five years ago.

This season has been classified as “high severity” for all age groups. The CDC estimates 47 million illnesses, 610,000 hospitalizations, and 26,000 deaths linked to the flu so far.

While adult hospitalizations often involve patients with existing health conditions, 53% of hospitalized children had a known underlying issue. The agency continues to recommend that everyone 6 months and older receive a yearly flu vaccine.
