A global survey conducted by Nira Data for the Alliance of Democracies Foundation found that international perceptions of the United States have dropped below those of China for the first time in the poll’s history. The net perception rating of the U.S. declined to -5% from +22% last year, with only 45% of countries holding a positive view. In contrast, China’s rating rose to +14% from +5%.
Alliance founder Anders Fogh Rasmussen attributed the shift to President Donald Trump’s foreign policy. “President Trump has triggered a trade war, scolded Ukraine’s president in the Oval Office, left allies feeling vulnerable and enemies emboldened,” he said. “It’s no surprise that opinions have slipped even among people like me who spent their lives admiring the United States and what it stood for.”
The survey included responses from over 111,000 people across 100 countries. Trump was viewed negatively in 82 countries, compared to 61 for Russian President Vladimir Putin and 44 for Chinese President Xi Jinping.
