New York University has withheld a diploma from Logan Rozos, a student who used his commencement speech to denounce U.S. support for Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Rozos, speaking at NYU’s Gallatin School, referred to “U.S. complicity in this genocide,” drawing a standing ovation from some in the crowd. In response, NYU spokesperson John Beckman said Rozos “lied about the speech he was going to deliver and violated the commitment he made to comply with our rules.”

Beckman added that Rozos used the platform “to express his personal and one-sided political views,” and confirmed the university is pursuing disciplinary action. Pro-Israel organizations condemned the speech and called it a violation of Jewish students’ safety.

“No student — especially Jewish students — should have to sit through politicized rhetoric that promotes harmful lies about Israel,” the Anti-Defamation League said.

Rozos, an actor selected by peers to give the speech, did not respond to inquiries. Faculty members criticized the university’s decision, citing political pressure under President Donald Trump’s administration.
