A rare black tiger, exhibiting pseudo-melanism, was recently captured on camera marking its territory in Odisha's Similipal Tiger Reserve. This unique behavior was documented via a camera trap, showcasing the tiger leaving scratch marks on a tree—a common method tigers use to delineate their territory. The video, shared by Indian Forest Service officer Susanta Nanda, has garnered significant attention on social media platforms.

Black tigers are an exceptionally rare variant of the Bengal tiger, characterized by their dark pigmentation due to a genetic mutation known as pseudo-melanism. This mutation results in the fusion of stripes, giving the tiger a predominantly black appearance. Similipal Tiger Reserve is the only known habitat in the world where these melanistic tigers are found. According to the 2022 All India Tiger Estimation, out of 16 tigers recorded in Similipal, 10 displayed melanistic characteristics .

The sighting underscores the importance of conservation efforts in the region. Odisha is set to establish the world's first melanistic tiger safari near Similipal, aiming to boost wildlife tourism and awareness about this rare species . This initiative reflects the state's commitment to preserving its unique wildlife heritage.
