a catastrophic landslide engulfed the Swiss Alpine village of Blatten in the Lötschental Valley, following the partial collapse of the Birch Glacier. Approximately 90% of the village was buried under a massive flow of ice, rock, and mud. Fortunately, due to prior warnings from geologists about glacier instability, authorities had evacuated all 300 residents and their livestock nine days earlier, averting a larger tragedy.
Despite the evacuation, a 64-year-old man remains missing. Search efforts have been suspended due to ongoing debris movement and unsafe conditions. The landslide also blocked the Lonza River, creating a dammed lake that poses a risk of further flooding.
Experts attribute the disaster to climate change, noting that rising temperatures have accelerated glacier melt and destabilized permafrost in the Alps. Switzerland experienced a 4% loss in glacier volume in 2023, following a record 6% loss the previous year.
Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter is scheduled to visit the affected area, and the government has pledged full support to displaced residents. Blatten's mayor, Matthias Bellwald, expressed deep sorrow over the village's destruction but emphasized the community's resilience and commitment to rebuilding.
