The Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service are investigating a social media post by former FBI Director James Comey after he shared a photo of seashells arranged in the number “8647.” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem accused Comey of calling for the assassination of President Donald Trump, writing, “Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey just called for the assassination of @POTUS Trump.” Comey removed the image after backlash, stating he had not intended the message to be interpreted as violent.
Reports have interpreted “86” as slang for “eliminate” or “get rid of,” while “47” is widely associated with Trump’s current position as the 47th president. The combination has appeared in protest slogans and merchandise critical of Trump. Comey responded: “I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”
The Secret Service confirmed it is reviewing the matter, stating, “We take this responsibility very seriously and we are aware of the social media posts in question.”
