Bomb explosion rocks Kano; 5 reported killed, 15 others injured

No fewer than five people have been killed by a suspected explosion involving a military-grade mortar bomb in Kano.

15 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, caused panic in the affected area and drew emergency responders to the scene, including security personnel and medical teams.
The State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, who arrived at the scene shortly after the explosion, said the blast may have originated from a military ordnance believed to have been improperly handled or transported.

“I received a call that something serious had happened. When I arrived, I found that it was a suspected explosion—possibly a military mortar bomb. Fifteen people were injured, and unfortunately, five died,” he said.

Isheu Ibrahim Jadda, a vocal critic of Nigeria’s former Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, was arrested in Gashua, Yobe State, on Friday and detained overnight before being transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Damaturu on Saturday morning. His arrest is allegedly linked to his comments regarding a controversial ₦5,730,000,000 (five billion, seven hundred thirty million Naira) water project in Gashua.

The Federal Executive Council had approved ₦3,510,000,000 (three billion, five hundred ten million Naira) for two water projects in Gashua, aimed at extending water supply services and upgrading existing water works. These projects were deemed urgently needed due to a surge in kidney-related diseases among the local population.

However, investigations have revealed that despite full payments to contractors, many of these water projects remain incomplete or non-functional, leaving residents without access to potable water. For instance, a ₦492,000,000 (four hundred ninety-two million Naira) water supply project in Gashua was found abandoned, with the site overtaken by weeds and no evidence of ongoing work.

Further investigations uncovered that over ₦350,000,000 (three hundred fifty million Naira) allocated for constructing solar-powered and hand pump boreholes in Yobe North Senatorial District were mismanaged. Contracts were awarded to companies that failed to execute the projects, denying communities access to clean water.

The arrest of Jadda has raised concerns about the suppression of dissent and the lack of accountability in public project execution. Residents and activists are calling for transparency and proper utilization of funds to address the pressing water needs in the region.

JAMB Registrar weeps over UTME mass failure

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Wednesday broke into tears as he apologised for the errors in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

Oloyede, during a news conference in Bwari on Wednesday, took responsibility of the errors in the just concluded examinations.

He assured that the 379,997 affected candidates would be communicated through Short Message Service (SMS) by Thursday, so that they could reprint their slips for rescheduled examinations on Friday and Saturday.

Oloyede revealed that the glitches, which caused widespread outrage and confusion among candidates and stakeholders, were traced to a failure in the deployment of updated grading software by one of JAMB’s service providers.
