Adding to the controversy was the choice of music. The parade featured classic rock songs, including Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son,” a well-known anti-war anthem criticizing the privileged who escape military service. Many saw this as a deeply ironic and inappropriate choice for an event meant to honor military service—especially considering it was used to salute a president who himself avoided the draft. The move was widely mocked online and condemned by veterans and military commentators.

The event was also politically charged, with some viewing it as a personal tribute to Trump rather than a nonpartisan celebration of the military. Critics pointed out the cost of the parade—estimated between $25 to $45 million—as wasteful, especially in light of ongoing budget concerns facing the Department of Veterans Affairs. A majority of Americans, according to polls, felt the parade was an unnecessary use of taxpayer money.
